“Who’s your favourite MC, rapper or lyricist? Street poet, story teller, griot or wordsmith?” This was the question posed to some of my peers and some young hip hop enthusiasts stepping out of The Jump Off, one of London’s most innovative hip hop nights. The answers were very interesting, weird and amusing amongst other things. You can hear most of the answers on the lead song for my mix-cd entitled, YOUR FAVOURITE MC. In the song I pay homage to as many UK emcees as possible as well as some from the US and Africa (PBS, Reggie Rockstone, Trybsemen). I feel my population sample left out a lot of great names, but then again the question didn’t ask who was the greatest. I intend to make a part 2, which will hopefully have more answers from connoisseurs and the youth who are more into the garage/grime scenes over here in the UK. Who’s your favourite MC?
